Story
The entire north-eastern area of Favignana is made of tuff and presents the singular aspect of innumerable quarries, caves, sinkholes and erosions. The tuff was for centuries, together with fishing and agriculture, the primary source of income for the population of Favignana. Inside this sedimentary rock moved a large group of highly skilled quarrymen and with them: labourers, carters and sailors from the three Egadi islands and from Trapani. It is not known exactly when the exploitation of the island’s subsoil dates back: the elders speak of it as an activity connected with Favignana and there are those who date it back to Roman times.
