Story
Palermo is my city, and in some ways, it has also been my photography training ground. I stopped photographing on the streets of Palermo in 2017 when the process of turning the historic center into a tourist attraction began. Although a city—especially from a photographic point of view—is not just its historic center, the fact remains that the “real” Palermo, in terms of street life, traditions, shops, and markets, was found in the historic center. However, this statement no longer holds true. The historic center of Palermo has been transformed into yet another European tourist village. The shops have disappeared, replaced by bars, restaurants, fast food joints, B&Bs, and hotels. Residents can no longer afford to buy houses in the city center due to rising prices. The current reality is a faded shadow of what Palermo was up until 15 years ago. Tourists today do not see or experience Palermo; they stay among themselves on streets that have become a fairground of mass-produced food sold at exorbitant prices.
This introduction leads into a collection (summary) of street photography I created over 10 years, from 2007 to 2017, before the aforementioned touristification. Most of the photos were taken in the historic center, but there are also some from neighborhoods like Brancaccio and places outside the city center, such as Mondello. Essentially, over time, I have photographed every part of the city, and this is a brief visual narrative of what Palermo used to be, for better or worse.
Racconto
Palermo è la mia città e per certi aspetti è stata anche la mia palestra fotografica. Ho smesso di fotografare per strada a Palermo nel 2017, quando iniziò il processo di turistificazione del centro storico. Sebbene una città – soprattutto da un punto di vista fotografico – non è soltanto il centro storico, rimane il fatto che la “vera” Palermo, nel senso della vita da strada, delle tradizioni, delle botteghe e dei mercati la si trovava nel centro storico. Ma quanto appena detto oggi è smentito. Il centro storico di Palermo è stato trasformato nell’ennesimo villaggio per turisti europeo. Le botteghe sono scomparse lasciando il posto a bar, ristoranti, fast food, b&b e hotel. Gli abitanti non possono più comprare casa nelcentro città a causa dell’aumento dei prezzi. La realtà attuale è un’ombra sbiadita della Palermo che c’era sino a 15 anni fa. I turisti oggi non vedono e vivono Palermo, stanno tra di loro in strade che sono divenute la fiera del cibo di massa pagato, peraltro, a carissimo prezzo.
Tale premessa introduce una raccolta (sintesi) di street photography che ho fatto nell’arco di 10 anni tra il 2007 e il 2017, prima della turistificazione sopra citata. Le foto sono in prevalenza realizzate nel centro storico, ma ci sono anche alcune borgate come Brancaccio e luoghi fuori dal centro cittadino come per esempio Mondello. Sostanzialmente nel corso del tempo ho fotografato in ogni parte della città e questa è un breve racconto per immagini di quello che era prima Palermo, nel bene e nel male.
