Tokyo all in one!

Story
Until 2009, I had been photographing with analog film, and for the first time, I found myself on a photographic trip with a digital camera. I had a lot of equipment with me; the bag I carried around weighed 12 kg! Today, I go around with a maximum of 2 kg between camera and lenses, and it even seems too heavy. In any case, until that moment, I had mostly focused on landscape and nature photography, but when I arrived in Tokyo, I was captivated by the cultural diversity I encountered, so I started photographing people. I can say that Tokyo was the first place in my photographic journey that made me passionate about street photography and portraiture.
At that time, I certainly didn’t have a photographic style that could be recognized as personal, nor was I attracted to any particular aspect. So, I photographed everything that simply caught my attention during the long and tiring daily walks. I was particularly fascinated by the bustling life in the city parks: people playing music, elderly practicing ikebana, Rockabilly dancers, theater groups, and people practicing Tai Chi – an art I later began teaching in parks myself.
I also took many nighttime photos of the city, but the digital equipment of that time didn’t allow for great results with the artificial light in the city.
From a photographic point of view, Tokyo represents my first real experimentation with digital photography, with color in the context of portraits, street photography, and night lights. I have wonderful memories of it.
Racconto
Sino al 2009 avevo fotografato in analogico, con la pellicola, e per la prima volta mi trovavo a fare un viaggio fotografico con una fotocamera digitale. Avevo con me molta attrezzatura, la borsa con la quale andavo in giro pesava 12kg! Oggi vado in giro con massimo 2 kg tra fotocamera e obbiettivi e mi sembra persino troppo pesanrte. A ogni modo, sino a quel momento mi ero concentrato più che altro sulla fotografia paesaggistica e naturalistica ma quando arrivai a Tokyo fui rapito dalla diversità culturale che incontrai, così iniziai a fotografare le persone. Posso dire che Tokyo è stato il primo luogo del mio percorso fotografico che mi fece appassionare alla street photography e al ritratto.
A quel tempo non avevo certo un modo di fotografare che riconducesse a uno stile personale e non ero attratto da qualche aspetto in particolare. Così fotografavo tutto quello che semplicemente attirava la mia attenzione durante le lunghe e faticose passeggiate quotidiane. Mi affascinò in particolare la vita brulicante che c’era nei parchi cittadini: gente che suonava, anziani che praticavano l’ikebana, ballerini di Rockabilly, gruppi di teatro e gente che praticava il Taichi… quell’arte che successivamente iniziai anche io a insegnare nei parchi.
Scattai anche molte fotografie notturne della città, ma l’attrezzatura digitale del tempo non consentiva di avere ottimi risultati con la luce artificiale che c’era in città.
Tokyo, dal punto di vista fotografico, rappresenta per me la mia prima vera sperimentazione con la fotografia digitale, con il colore nel contesto del ritratto, della strada e con le luci notturne. Ne ho bellissimi ricordi.
